Plastic waste is one of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Every year, hundreds of millions of tonnes of plastic waste are generated, yet a significant share still ends up in landfills or is incinerated instead of being recycled or reused. Many types of plastic are difficult to recycle efficiently, creating a long-term environmental burden. Slovak company Terratico is addressing this challenge by transforming plastic waste into a new construction material for use in architecture and design.

Terratico develops and manufactures an innovative composite material that combines recycled plastic with a concrete-based mixture, creating a lighter, more durable, and more flexible alternative to conventional concrete and terrazzo. Using its proprietary patented technology, the company can incorporate up to 45% recycled plastic into the concrete mixture while maintaining the mechanical properties required for construction and design applications. The resulting material is approximately 30% lighter than conventional concrete, while offering high strength, improved crack resistance, lower water absorption, and greater flexibility in design. Terratico's technology enables the production of a wide range of products, from cladding panels, large-format slabs, and façade elements to both interior and exterior architectural applications.

We supported Terratico at a key stage of its growth, as the company was preparing to transition from product development to industrial-scale manufacturing and broader commercialisation. Together with Crowdberry, VFF invested in the company to help expand its production capacity, launch large-scale manufacturing, and create the conditions for further international growth.

A new video series featuring innovative companies from the VFF portfolio

Terratico is the next company featured in Venture to Future Fund's new video series showcasing innovative businesses from our portfolio. Through this series, we highlight companies that are tackling global challenges through technology, research, and ambitious entrepreneurial vision.

In this episode, you'll learn how the idea of transforming plastic waste into a next-generation construction material came to life, the challenges of scaling production, and what it takes to turn an innovative technology into a commercially viable product with international ambitions.
